
Wise, Virginia - UVa-Wise scored a big Mid-South Conference victory on Thursday by posting a four set victory over the University of Pikeville. The Cavaliers won the first set 25-17 before falling 24-26 in the second set; with the match tied at one set each, UVa-Wise posted consecutive set victories 25-23 and 25-17 to secure the win.
UVa-Wise was led by Mikalea Anders who finished with 18 kills, four block assists, three service aces, and three digs. In the victory, three other Cavaliers finished with double digit kills as Megan Funk, 13, Brittany Simpson, 13, and Robyn Doughtery, 11 all had solid performances at the net. With the solid net play, Veronica Sanchez handed out a career high 52 assists in aiding the Cavs to the win. On defense, Lindsey Burke continued her strong play by finishing with 30 digs.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Virginia Intermont College. Tabbed "Dig for Cure Night", the match will promote breast cancer awareness; t-shirts will be sold and donations will be accepted at the event. Tuesday's contest is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
