Wise, Va. - Jacob Appleby's 21-yard field goal propeled 21st-ranked Union College past 10th-rated UVa-Wise on the gridiron Saturday. The Bulldogs drove 75 yards in eight plays to set up the game-winner to defeat the Highland Cavaliers, 37-34, in Mid-South East Division play.
The Union win puts it in a second place tie with UVa-Wise both in league play at 4-1 and overall with 7-2 marks. The Cavs can make a three-way tie if they can defeat the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands (8-1/5-0) on the road next Saturday.
Cavs' wide receiver Matt Barbour (Brookneal, Va.) had the biggest day with a school record tying 13 catches for 177 yards. The numbers were enough to give him the UVa-Wise career records with 151 receptions and 2,422 yards.
Quarterback Randy Hippeard completed 26 of 44 attempts for 469 yards and three scores. Hakeem Abdul-Saboor pulled in seven passes for 154 yards while Aric Evans added two catches for 75 yards, both for scores of 32 and 43 yards. Brad Ricker also had a 46-yard touchdown catch.
James Haley (Gladys, Va.) was the top tackler for the Cavs with 10 stops and a fumble recovery. Keith McBride (Va. Beach, Va.) added nine stops and a tackle for loss. Matt Gular (Hampton, Va.) recorded seven tackles, two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, forced a fumble and broke up a pass.
The Bulldogs offense outgained the Cavs 506 to 470 yards on the day. Terence Pollock was the workhorse with 169 yards on 22 tries. Brinkley fired for 329 yards and four scores on 17 of 26 passing. Rolando Dyer pulled in three passes for 97 yards. Marekus Smith paced the Union defense with nine tackles, a sack and two stops for loss.
UVa-Wise rode a strong start of the day to a 20-7 first quarter lead but saw Union own the second stanza by 17-7 for a 27-24 halftime score.
Appleby booted a 49-yard field goal as the lone third quarter points before Union captured its first lead midway through the fourth on a Mike Brinkley to Chris Thomas 62-yard scoring pass to make it 34-27.
UVa-Wise tied the game on a two-yard plunge by Abdul-Saboor at 34-34 with 3:40 left on the clock. Union took the kickoff and moved 76 yards on its first four plays to go into field goal range to setup the game-winning kick.
