
Rio Grande, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande overcame a seven point second half deficit to post a 93-83 overtime victory over UVa-Wise in Mid-South action on Saturday. The University of Rio Grande was led by Turrell Morris and Jermaine Warmack who each scored 22 points; Morris also grabbed 12 rebounds to post a double-double.
Trailing by three, the Red Storm's Turrell Morris connected on a three with six seconds remaining to tie the contest; UVa-Wise was unable to score at the buzzer as a Travis Berry jumper came up short from the left baseline forcing the game into overtime. The overtime period was dominated by Rio Grande as the Red Storm outscored UVa-Wise 21-11 in the extra session. Shaun Gunnell, 19, and Brad Cubbie, 11joined Morris and Warmack in double figure scoring for the victorious Red Storm while Josh Jordan led all scorers with 27 points for UVa-Wise. The 27 points for Jordan pushed the senior past the 1,000 point mark for his career to become the second Cavalier this season to eclipse 1,000 points. Fellow senior, Travis Berry surpassed 1,000 points earlier this season at Cumberlands (KY).
With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in league play, Rio Grande improves to 10-8 overall and 2-4 in Mid-South play. UVa-Wise will return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt against Virginia University-Lynchburg; tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. inside the UVa-Wise Convocation Center.
