
Wise, Virginia - Travis Berry scored a game high 28 points as UVa-Wise completed a season sweep of Virginia University-Lynchburg with a 79-72 victory on Tuesday. Berry had his strongest all-around game of the year by finishing eight of 19 from the field and ten of 11 from the charity stripe while grabbing seven rebounds and handing out four assists in the non-conference victory. The 28 point performance extended Berry's streak of 20 or more points to five consecutive games.
Berry jump started the Cavalier offense by knocking down two free throws due to an administrative technical foul on Virginia University-Lynchburg before the opening tip. The Alexandria, Virginia native completed a quick 5-0 run by drilling a three from the left wing before the visiting Dragons' first possession of the contest. UVa-Wise would maintain the lead until the 13:12 mark of the first half as Lynchburg's Dmitry Zimin blocked a shot, secured the rebound, and raced to the other end of the floor for a layup to give the visitors a 13-11 lead. Two minutes later, the Cavs would regain the lead and never relinquish it as a Jermaine Wright collected an offensive rebound and put it back in to make the score 14-13. Lynchburg would tie the game twice over the remainder of the opening stanza but entered the locker room trailing 32-28. The Cavs out rebounded the Dragons 25-18 in the opening half while also enjoying a nine point advantage from the free throw line in the opening half.
UVa-Wise appeared to have put the game out of reach mid-way through the second half with an 11-2 run that was highlighted by five forced turnovers. However, the Dragons' Juiss Turja caught fire from the perimeter by knocking down four second half three pointers to keep the game within reach. Lynchburg cut the lead to six with 2:14 to play on an Egor Shakmetov hook shot but the Dragons were unable to produce defensive stops over the final two minutes of the game. UVa-Wise answered Shakmetov's shot with a 5-0 run to put the game out of reach to complete a season sweep over Lynchburg. UVa-Wise defeated Lynchburg 76-67 in overtime on November 28th.
Jermaine Wright scored 21 points on eight of 11 shooting for the Cavaliers while Norris Gaskins scored 13 points in the victory. The Dragons were led by Juiss Turja and Christopher Calvan who each scored 15 points, Denuis Gravely, 12 points and Rondell Dews, 10 points also scored in double figures for Lynchburg. The victory improves the Cavs to 6-8 on the season; UVa-Wise will return to action on Saturday when the team hosts defending national champion University of Pikeville for a 4:00 p.m. tip inside the Convocation Center.
