Milligan, Tennessee-After sweepinng Bluefield College at home Monday, The University of Virginia's College at Wise softball squad split with Milligan College on the road today. The Cavaliers got shut out 9-0 in the first game, but rallied late in the second contest of the double header to register a 6-4 win. Chancli Connaster shut down the visiting Cavs in the first game, pitching six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out eight batters. Chelsey Booth registered the win in game two while Kaylla Holdway got the save in after coming in late to seal the deal in the seventh.
The first game saw the bats of UVa-Wise, which had been red hot in the most recent contest, get completely shut down by a superb pitching performance by Connaster. Only three Cav batters reached base, while the home squad took a 2-0 lead in the opening stanza and never looked back. Milligan finished with two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the six to complete the shut out.
The second half of the double header was a much more exciting affair. Each squad was held without a run for the first five innings until the Cavalier offense exploded in the sixth, scoring five runs in the top half of the inning. Kristina Romualdo continued to be one of the top Cavalier run producers, driving in two runs and scoring one at the plate. Allyssa Zebrowski drove in a run for UVa-Wise, as did Ashlee Washburn, Ashleigh Roenker and Allyson Reece. The Cavs were not out of trouble in the last inning, as the home team would not quit, scoring four runs in the seventh to pull Milligan within two runs at 6-4. But Roenker and Kaylla Holdway came in during the seventh inning and retired the remaining batters, allowing the Cavs to escape with a crucial road sweep.
The split brings the Cavaliers record to 5-9 overall. UVa-Wise will be in action again March 6th, as they travel to take on the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears. The double header will begin at 3:00 PM and all results can be found at http://www.uvawisecavs.com
