The UVa Wise women's cross country were pitted against a higher level of competition than typically in previous years. The race included Division I Radford University, and a slew of strong, established Division II schools. Race conditions provided another challenge with heat and high humidity slowing the pace considerably (In 2011 the median 5K time was 21:57, in 2012 it was 22:47). Overall UVa Wise finished 8th of 10 schools, while Lenoir Rhyne claimed the victory.
Megan Hilliard (39th, 23:47) and Emily Brock (41st, 23:56) led the team, and worked together for most of the race to push the pace. Samantha Balthis (47th, 25:00) and Whitney Carico (49th, 25:27) patiently worked their way through the pack overtaking competitors one by one. Madison Compton (50th, 26:07) made a late charge gaining valuable points for the team. Then Candice Discepolo (54th, 27:11) running her first race after a long break gained considerable experience that will pay off in later races.
