Wise, Virginia -  The Mid-South Conference announced on Monday that UVa-Wise freshman linebacker Matt Sandoval had been named Defensive Player of the Week.  Sandoval recorded 17 tackles in Saturday's game against Cumberland University to establish a new career high.

The Roanoke, Virginia native recorded 12 solo tackles while assisting on 10 to increase his season tackle total to 20.5.  The 17 total tackles by the freshman are the most by a Cavalier since James Haley finished with 17 tackles against Lambuth in 2008.  Sandoval's award is the first of his career and the first by a Cavalier this season.

UVa-Will play its homecoming game this Saturday when the team hosts Belhaven University.  Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM inside Carl Smith Stadium.
