
Rio Grande, Oh. - Host University of Rio Grande scored a pivotal Mid-South victory over UVa-Wise in volleyball action on Tuesday. The victorious RedStorm posted a straight set victory by scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-13 to move into a third place tie in the Mid-South. The loss drops the Cavaliers to ninth in the league, a half-game behind St. Catharine College for the final spot in next month's Mid-South Conference Tournament.
Rio Grande was led by Whitney Smith and Erin Sherman who collected 17 and 12 kills respectively. Smith finished the match with zero errors on 24 attacks to go along with her 17 kills. The duo of Kayla Landaker and Kelsey Martin combined for 40 assists in the conference match.
For UVa-Wise, Veronica Sanchez handed out 20 assists while Robyn Doughtery finished with 10 kills. India Dillard continued her strong season with 11 digs and Maya Hamlett finished with two blocks in the loss.
The victory improves the RedStorm to 18-8 overall and 9-3 in league action. The Cavaliers fall to 7-22 overall and 4-9 in Mid-South play. UVa-Wise will return to action on Friday when the team travels to Montreat College for a non-conference match. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
