Wise, Va. - Each week during the 2012season, the UVa-Wise football team will honor a member of the campus community as an honorary captain. The captain will meet with the team throughout the week and will serve as an honorary captain when the captains meet at the 50 yard line for the coin toss prior to the start of the game.This week, the team will honor English professor Gillian Huang-Tiller.
Gillian Huang-Tiller is an associate professor of English in the Department of Language and Literature at The University of Virginia's College at Wise, where she teaches modern and contemporary literature and serves as a faculty advisor to the College's literary journal, the Jimson Weed. She has done extensive research on the poetry of E. E. Cummings and is a contributing editor to Spring: The Journal of the E. E. Cummings Society. A native of Taiwan, she learned about American football while pursuing graduate studies at Oklahoma State University and then at the University of Notre Dame. She came to UVa-Wise (then Clinch Valley College) in 1996 and joined the full-time faculty after earning a Ph.D. in English from Notre Dame in 2000. She believes in the Fighting Highland Cavalier spirit as much as the Fighting Irish spirit.
