Big Stone Gap, VA – Several UVa-Wise student-athletes and athletic department staff members participated in the 19th Annual Voyage of Discovery/Academic Night at Powell Valley Middle School on November 20. Freshmen football player and Seymour, TN native, Eric White and Lindsey Burke, a junior volleyball players from Gate City, VA shared their experiences as collegiate student-athletes. They spoke to approximately 60 middle schoolers and their parents about the challenges they faced in the transition from high school to college and the value of practicing good time management and study skills to develop productive study habits.
Joining Eric and Lindsey were UVa-Wise Defensive Coordinator, Justin Hamilton, Head Athletic Trainer, Kendra Potter, and Associate Athletic Director, Kendall Rainey. Coach Hamilton shared words of wisdom regarding the importance of continuous learning and taking advantage of opportunities. He emphasized the significance of creating positive habits growing up as they will be with you throughout your life.
Ms. Potter discussed how her playing experiences in high school and college sports impacted her career path and highlighted the necessary dedication required for success. She focused on transferrable skills such as commitment, dedication, and communication. She also presented information to the participants on careers in sports outside of being a professional athlete or coach.
Ms. Rainey presented information on academic requirements to play college sports in different divisions and highlighted what was required to attend UVa-Wise and participate in athletics.
