Wise, Va – The Cavaliers softball team (6-1) took full advantage of a beautiful, sunshiny day at Cavalier Field by sweeping a double-header against Salem International University (0-2). Patience was the story of the day as the Cavaliers in both games combined drew 15 base-on-balls.
In the first game, Rachel Hawks struck out eight and only allowed three hits in a complete game shutout as the Cavaliers won 9-0. UVa-Wise was aided by four errors committed by Salem International which led to the host scoring nine runs, seven of those earned. The Cavaliers chased Tigers starter Kayla Mangold after just three innings. Mangold walked six Cavs in her three innings of work. UVa-Wise was led by its cleanup hitter Kristina Romualdo who went 2-3 with three runs batted in. Along with Romualdo, Christina Ziemba also had a two hit game and Allyssa Zebrowski ended the game by mercy rule with a two run homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In game two, Kelly Waycaster started the game for the Cavs and went the distance. Waycaster in seven innings of work allowed six hits, one run, walked one and struck out five as the Cavaliers beat the visiting Tigers 8-1. UVa-Wise had 10 hits as a team Christina Ziemba, Sarah Wilshire, and Kristina Romualdo all had multiple hit games. Romualdo with her two hits added three RBI.
In the two game set Kristina Romualdo went 4-5 with five RBI and Allyssa Zebrowski went 5-6 scoring three runs. The Cavaliers as a team scored 17 runs in 13 innings of play.
The Cavaliers will ship out to Cumberland University on February 27th for their second meeting with a Mid-South Foe.
