MARS HILL, N.C. - The trip to Mars Hill College was not an enjoyable one for the UVa-Wise Cavaliers (10-7) as they dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Lions (13-5) 4-0 4-1 in non-conference action.
In game one, the Cavaliers scattered four hits and were unable to get a run on the board as the Lions used three pitchers with Allie Carrigan (1-0) getting the win for three scoreless innings of work. The Lions scored all four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with a little help on two errors from the Cavs. Robyn Stanek led the way for the Lions going 2-4 with two RBIs. For UVa-Wise, Rachel Hawks (4-4) was relieved in the fifth with two outs and given the loss after giving up eight hits and four runs with only one of those runs being earned.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cavaliers lone run came off of a solo shot by Kristina Romualdo in the first inning with two outs. The Lions would then counter with a three run, second inning on five hits, chasing the Cavs starting pitcher Kellie Waycaster from the game after just one inning of work. In the inning, Waycaster allowed three runs on five hits. Mars Hill would score one more in the sixth off a sacrifice fly by Ashley McCurry. Designated player Erin Vickery went 3-3 in the game scoring one run to lead the Lions. Waycaster was attributed the loss which drops her record to 4-2 as Taylor Hussey (7-0) gets the win for the Lions after pitching five strong innings only allowing one hit and not allowing a run to cross the plate.
UVa-Wise did not have a single player record multiple hits in either game and only had seven hits in the two games.
UVa-Wise will host nationally ranked Lindsey Wilson College on Friday for two games starting at 4pm.
