In game one of the 2009, best of five, UVA-Wise Baseball World Series at
Stallard Field, the Red Team pounded out 12 hits to edge the Black Team 10-9.
All ten hitters who appeared in the game for the Red Team had a hit in the
contest. The Red Team bats were led by Freshman Brian King (Chantilly, VA) who
was 3-3 with a double, solo homerun, and 3 RBI's. Freshman Mason Mays (Basset,
VA) added 3 RBI's.
The Black Team scored first when Senior 3B Dusty Haigler (Hanover, PA) drove in
Junior OF Alex Feemster (Ashburn, VA) with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
The Red Team answered with three runs in the bottom of the second on a Brian
King RBI single and an RBI double off the bat of Freshman SS Danny Bates
(Chantilly, VA). In the top of the third the Black Team responded with three
runs of their own on a Dusty Haigler triple which plated two, followed by an
RBI double off the bat of Sophomore OF Craig Beale (Franklin, VA). The Red Team
tied it at 4 on Freshman 3B Taylor Jones' (Franklin County, VA) RBI single. The
Black Team retook the lead 5-4 on a 4th inning RBI single by Sophomore 1B Kirk
Jennings (Colonial Heights, VA). The Red Team tied it at 5 in the bottom of the
5th on a Mason Mays sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the 6th King broke the tie
for the Red Team with a solo homerun to centerfield off of Freshman P Logan
Arey (Bridgewater, VA). The Red Team added four more runs in the 6th to take a
10-5 lead in to the 7th. The Black Team rallied for four runs in the 7th before
Junior Pitcher Josh Joseph (Axton, VA) came in to pick up the save for the Red
Team. Freshman P Josh Guizar (Fredericksburg, VA) threw three innings in relief
for the Red Team to pick up the win. Arey took the loss for the Black
Team.
The two teams will be back at it on Tuesday afternoon with the first pitch
scheduled for 4:30PM at Stallard Field. Game three will be held on Friday Night
at 7:30 PM at Stallard Field. Games four and game five will be held if
necessary on Monday and Tuesday, October 5th and 6th with the time TBA. All are
welcomed to come out and support the UVA-Wise Baseball Program.
