
Wise, Va. - The biggest upset of the season for the UVa-Wise volleyball team fell just short on Thursday night. The Highland Cavaliers took the opening two games by identical 26-24 tallies only to see the Tornado rally to take the final three bouts for the 3-2 victory.
Following the opening two close UVa-Wise wins, King (14-2) came on for a 25-15 and 15-9 in the third and fourth contests. The visitors kept the steam going with a 15-7 fifth deciding decision.
UVa-Wise (5-12) received 11 kills from both Kayla Dougherty (Nickelsville, Va.) and Megan Funk (Fries, Va.). Kelley Bumgarner (Johnson City, Tenn.) handed out 33 assists and dug 10 balls. Ruth Hoover (New Castle, Va.) added 15 digs and two aces.
King was paced by Sarah Van Goethem and Morgan Machen with 17 and 13 kills. Katie Fleming had 28 assists while Natalie Brown served six aces and dished 13 assists.
The Cavs will travel to face the Lady Cavaliers of Montreat College for a 1:00 p.m. Saturday match.
