Big Stone Gap, VA-- UVa-Wise wrapped up the fall portion of the 2009 season on Tuesday when they competed in the Lonesome Pine Invitational. UVa-Wise golfer Evan Sturgill captured the individual title for the tournament. The Highland Cavaliers finished fourth as a team in the event.

Sturgill (Pound, VA) shot a 153 for the tournament leaving him in a first place tie with Justin Brown from Virginia Intermont. Sturgill and Brown then traded blows in a playoff as each golfer matched the other in the first hole. Sturgill was able to get the upper hand in the second hole as he defeated Brown in a two hole playoff. 

Other UVa-Wise golfers included David Jones (Ameila, VA) who finished the event with a 161, Justin Stanley (Haysi, VA) who shot a 167 by knocking 7 strokes off his day one total of 87 to shoot an 80 on day two, Blake Roberts (Wise, VA) who improved 5 strokes on day two to finish with a 185, and Sean Hensley (Gate City, VA) who shot a 189. The Highland Cavaliers will return to the golf course in the spring to complete their 2009-2010 schedule.
