
Kingsport, TN- Mikaela Anders was selected to the Appalachian Athletic Conference First Team for her performance during the 2009 season. Anders, the lone UVa-Wise representative played in every Highland Cavalier game this season posting 372 kills.
Anders a 6-1 sophomore middle hitter from Galax was a complete player this season. Along with her AAC best 372 kills she also lead the league in kills/set at 3.6. She was also among the league's best in hitting percentage, 2nd, and blocks, 5th.
A finalist for AAC Player of the Year Anders has moved into the ranks of Highland Cavalier greats. Anders made her mark on the season record book in 2009. Her 372 kills places her 3rd, she also stands 4th in total attacks, and ranks in the top ten in kills per game. Career wise she currently stands 5th on the all time kills list at UVa-Wise with 672.
Along with Anders' selection UVa-Wise had three players selected to the All-Academic Team. Kayla Doughtery, Megan Funk, and Samantha Brummette were honored for their performance in the classroom. Doughtery's (Nickelsville, VA) season was highlighted by an 11 kill performance against King College. Megan Funk's (Fries, VA) best match was saved for the end of the season when she had 15 kills at the AAC Tournament against Milligan. Brummette (Wise, VA) contributed 122 assists on the season including 23 against Concord.
