Wise, Va. - With the start of the season only 54 days away, UVa-Wise
announces a tough and challenging 2010 baseball schedule for the upcoming
season. The docket details a full slate
of 55 contests including four NAIA ranked and/or receiving votes teams along
with a 2009 NAIA World Series participating team.
After two 30-win seasons, the Highland Cavaliers will look to regain their
form this spring after a 23-24 final result in 2009. First baseman/pitcher Brad Robbins and
outfielder Luis Roa will guide the 2010 squad after both hit over .400 and
combined for 29 doubles, 15 home runs and 98 rbi.
The UVa-Wise slate will see 24 home games, 26 road contests and five affairs
on neutral site venues. The Cavs season
starts at home when Rio Grande, who is receiving national votes, comes to
Stallard Field on Feb. 6th.
On the road, UVa-Wise will have a swing to Georgia to face 2009 NAIA World
Series qualifier Berry College for three games over Feb. 19th and 20th. The Cavs will also make an early season trip
to the Newport News Apprentice School to play a doubleheader at the historic
War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Va. on Feb. 27th.
The club makes a long road swing to begin the month of March. Following a three-game set at Bryan College
to start Appalachian Athletic Conference action, UVa-Wise will play five games
in three days at the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa Beach, Fla. on March 8-10. On the way back northward, the Cavs will stop
for a second three-game AAC set this time at Covenant College.
UVa-Wise will have the usual ranked two conference foes for three games
apiece at 16th-rated Union College (3/19 & 3/22) and hosting 11th-ranked
Tennessee Wesleyan to end the regular season (5/1-2). A third league team which is receiving votes
in the preseason, Bluefield College will play a series in Wise in mid-April
(4/10-11).
