
Wise, Va. - King College proved to have just enough to edge past UVa-Wise, 68-62, in women's basketball on Saturday afternoon.
Leading 65-54, the Tornado (9-8) saw the Highland Cavaliers (9-7) go on an 8-3 spurt to close the margin to 66-62 with 46 seconds left. The home team could get no closer as King added two insurance free throws with nine ticks for the 68-62 final.
Kristin Mullins (Clintwood, Va.) hit seven of 10 tries and all four free throws for 18 points to go with 11 boards. Brittany Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) added 11 points. Amber Carter (Bristow, Va.) contributed nine tallies and handed out six assists.
Ashley Deans paced the visitors with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Allison Bosse and Beth Raby hit in double digits with 13 and 11 points. King won the battle on the boards, 42-35.
The Tornado led by as many as 10 points, 16-6, before the Cavs came back to tie the first half score two times but trailed 27-22 for intermission.
The Cavs were unable to secure the lead in the second 20 minutes as they were able to reach within a point, 42-41, but could get no closer.
UVa-Wise will host 25th-ranked Bryan College when it returns to Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night, January 20th at 5:30 p.m.
