Amber Carter and Kristin Mullins combined for 39 points to power UVa-Wise wire-to-wire
over Bryan College, 78-64, in a key Appalachian Athletic Conference women's
basketball affair.
Carter drained a triple 1:19 into the contest for the game's first points and Mullins followed with two buckets as the Highland Cavaliers built a double figure lead in the first 10 minutes of play and never looked back.
The victory takes UVa-Wise to 10-7 on the season, the program's first double digit win campaign since winning the AAC in 2005-06 with a 24-10 final mark. The win also made the Cavs 5-2 in league play.
Carter downed nine of 11 tries including four of five triples for 22 points to go with four assists and six steals. Mullins added 17 points on eight of 17 from the floor with four boards, three assists and two steals. Meghan Rutherford chipped in 10 points and Brittany Maxwell nine.
Bryan (13-7/4-4 AAC) saw Bethany McArthur lead its cause with 16 points while Amber Smith had 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
After leading 36-27 at half, UVa-Wise saw Bryan chip away over the first nine minutes and pull to within five points, 53-48, with 11:20 showing on the clock. Alexa Orr answered with a three-pointer for the home team and Emily Doane followed with her own long-range shot to push the difference back to nine, 59-50, at 9:36. The Cavs would not be challenged the rest of the way for the 78-64 final tally.
UVa-Wise will remain home and host Union College Saturday, Jan. 23rd starting at 2:00 p.m.
