Jackson floating jumper in the lane with four seconds left completed the Union
College men's basketball comeback over UVa-Wise, 80-78, on Saturday afternoon.
The Highland
Cavaliers (7-10) turned the ball over on its own end with 34 seconds left in a
tied contest, 78-78. After a Union
timeout, Jackson took the ball from the left corner, drove into the lane under
heavy UVa-Wise pressure and banked home the go ahead bucket. In the last play, Adam Hood's three-pointer
went off the rim to complete the Union comeback victory.
On the day,
Pance Kecev became 29th player in UVa-Wise program history to reach
1,000 career points with two free throws with 1:27 in the game for the 16
points he needed. Sam Eligwe chipped in
15 points. Josh Jordan added 13 points
and six rebounds while Kevin Perry grabbed seven boards with 10 points. Hood contributed 10 points of his own.
Curtis
Stephens had top game honors with 27 points for Union (11-11/5-4 AAC). Jackson and Kearney Demus finished 11 points
apiece.
UVa-Wise ran
out of the gate to an 11-point lead, 16-5, just 2:06 into the contest. The difference grew to as many as 15 points,
37-22, on a three-pointer by Travis Berry. In the last nine minutes, Union started its comeback by outscoring the
host, 20-10, to pull within 47-42 at half.
The Bulldogs
tied the game for the first time, 54-54, at 14:37 and the game remained a two
possession game the rest of the way through the winning basket with four
seconds.
UVa-Wise
will face Milligan College on the road Wednesday night, Jan. 27th
starting at 7:30 p.m.
