Boxscore Milligan
College, Tenn. - Leading 82-81, UVa-Wise connected on three of four free throws
in the final 14 seconds to upset 25th-ranked Milligan College,
85-81, in Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball Wednesday night.
The Highland
Cavaliers (12-7) take over the top spot in the AAC with the victory at
7-2. The Lady Buffs (14-9) fall a half
game behind at 7-3. The win also doubles
the number of victories from a year ago for UVa-Wise from six to 12.
After a
Milligan basket to cut the score to 82-81, Meghan Rutherford was fouled with
13.2 ticks on the clock. Rutherford made
one of two attempts for an 83-81 score. The Lady Buffs raced down the other end of the floor to see Jaimee Hill
miss a three-point attempt and UVa-Wise's Kristin Mullins pull in the
carom. Mullins connected on both foul
shots upon being fouled right away for what would be the 85-81 final.
Mullins made
seven of 11 shots for 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her sixth
double-double. Ayla Young downed four
triples as part of her 16 points. Brittany
Maxwell hit for 14 points while Amber Carter added 14 points and three assists. Chelsea Cluesman chipped in seven points and
grabbed eight rebounds on the night.
Alisha
Mainer led Milligan with 17 points while Heather Mandela contributed 16 points
and 16 rebounds.
UVa-Wise
returns home for a 2:00 p.m. Saturday affair with Bluefield College.
