As time ran out, Kristin Mullins was fouled and made the game-winning free
throw with no time on the clock to give the Appalachian Athletic Conference
leading UVa-Wise a 78-77 victory over Bluefield College Monday.
Trailing
77-65 with 1:06 left, the Lady Rams (15-6) netted 12-straight points with two
triples in the mix to tie the contest with 22 seconds left. After retaining the ball with eight tenths of
a second left, Mullins took the inbounds pass and was slapped across the arm as
time ran out. The sophomore stepped to
the line and swished the first shot to start the winning celebration, 78-77.
The Highland
Cavaliers (13-7) increase its AAC lead as they improved to 8-2 while both the
Lady Rams and Lady Buffs of Milligan, who fell to Union College, are now 7-4.
For the
second week in a row, Mullins earned the AAC's Women's Basketball Player of the
Week honors. The Clintwood, Va. product
hit nine of 17 attempts and seven of 11 free throws for her highest output of
the year with 25 points to go with nine rebounds and two blocks.
Sophomore
Ayla Young netted 17 points of her own while Meghan Rutherford chipped in 11
tallies with both having six boards. Brittany Maxwell added eight points with Amber Carter contributing seven
points, five rebounds and four assists.
Bluefield
had four players in double digits with 13 points from De'Arra Darling having
the high total. The visitors
outrebounded the home team, 53-47, but made only 26.8% from the field in the
second stanza.
Down 26-22,
Bluefield scored the next nine points to go in front, 31-22. The Lady Rams continued to hold the advantage
to a tune of 39-35 at half. The visitors
increased the lead to nine, 50-41, at 16:48 early in the second half.
The game's
key stretch for UVa-Wise started with 11:51 left in the game. Behind 60-52, the Cavs put together a 15-0
run over the next seven minutes to burst in front, 67-60, with Mullins
accounting for eight of those points. The home lead grew to as many as 12 points, 77-65, to set up the exciting
final minute of play.
UVa-Wise
will take its four game win streak and seven of eight on the road Wednesday
night for 5:30 p.m. bout at Montreat College.
