Tennessee Wesleyan held off the late-charging UVa-Wise women's basketball team
on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs
drained all six of their free throws in the final 28 seconds to take away a
76-72 win over the Highland Cavaliers.
After
working its way into the top spot in the Appalachian Athletic Conference,
UVa-Wise (13-9) finds itself in a three-way tie with Milligan and Bluefield at
8-4 apiece. Tennessee Wesleyan improved
to 12-13 and 6-6 in the league.
Kristin Mullins
(Clintwood, Va.) totaled 21 points despite an off night shooting of eight of 18
while grabbing eight rebounds. Amber
Carter had a hot hitting contest with six of seven including all four
three-point tries for 19 points. Adrienne Womack chipped in 12 points with Meghan Rutherford adding 10
points and eight caroms.
The Lady
Bulldogs were on fire the whole day from long-range by hitting 11 of 19
tries. Lindsey Jackson had six of 11
triples for a game-best 22 points.
UVa-Wise
enjoyed its only advantage of the day in the first three minutes when Carter
hit a top of the key three-pointer, 7-4. Tennessee Wesleyan answered with a 13-1 run and never trailed again on
the day.
UVa-Wise
will make the long trek to Reinhardt College for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday,
Feb. 10th.
