- After having a highly-successful end of January, UVa-Wise has lost its
footing once the calendar has turned to February. In the program's first meeting, Reinhardt
College raced out to a 16-5 lead in the first five minutes and soared past the
Highland Cavaliers, 87-64, in women's basketball Wednesday night.
Kristin Mullins downed six of 12 shots for 17 points and six rebounds to pace UVa-Wise (13-10/8-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference). Meghan Rutherford added 12 tallies and eight rebounds. Chelsea Cluesman had a good effort off the bench with eight points and six caroms. Amber Carter contributed nine points and four assists with Ayla Young having eight points.
Reinhardt held UVa-Wise to only 31.1% (19 of 61) for the night and eight of 29 in the second 20 minutes.
Kinsey Galyon had the big night with 26 points on 12 of 16 shootings and eight rebounds for the Eagles (12-14/6-6 AAC). Jemere McCurty added 17 points.
Trailing 16-5 after five minutes, UVa-Wise cut the difference down to seven, 32-25, on a Mullins triple with 4:36 in the opening half. Reinhardt came right back by outscoring its visitors 12-6 the rest of the half for a 44-31 intermission tally.
The Cavs were unable to get any closer than the halftime score as the two teams split the first 16 points, 8-8, of the latter stanza before the Eagles pulled away for the 87-64 final.
UVa-Wise will stay on the road for a 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon affair at Virginia Intermont.
