After coasting on Saturday, UVa-Wise gutted out an overtime Appalachian
Athletic Conference victory on Monday night. The Highland Cavaliers used a balanced attack as has been the case to
record a 78-72 win over the Eagles of Reinhardt College Monday.
Trailing 72-71 with 1:26 in the overtime, UVa-Wise (14-10/11-4 AAC) netted the game's final seven points from the foul line to secure the seventh win in a row. The Cavs connected on seven of 10 charity stripe tries while the Eagles (15-10/8-6 AAC) missed their final four shots and committed a turnover on the other possession.
Adam Hood's 16 points on six of 10 tries led all scorers. Kevin Perry had 15 points and six rebounds on the inside. Pance Kecev netted all 14 of his points in the second half and overtime periods with Travis Berry chipping in 12 tallies. Norris Gaskins posted eight points and six rebounds while AAC Player of the Week Mark Phillips added six points and nine caroms.
Will Lewis and Kordel Alexander both scored 15 points in the losing cause for Reinhardt.
The visitors took a 28-27 advantage to the half where neither squad had a lead of more than four points with 10 ties.
Hood's three-pointer with 1:32 in regulation gave UVa-Wise a five-point lead, 63-58. The Eagles' Alexander laid in a basket and downed his own long-range shot around two Phillips free throws for a 65-63 score with 28 ticks. After Hood missed the front end of a one-and-one, Joseph Odugbela tied the game at 65-65 with 10 seconds. Hood fired a three-pointer but hit off the rim to set up the extra five minutes.
UVa-Wise will travel to face King College on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
