Rome, GA - The Highland Cavaliers opened up the 2010 baseball season with a 12-1 loss against Berry College on Friday. The win improved Berry's record to 5-4 on the season while keeping them unbeaten at home.
Berry struck first in the contest with a two out rally in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Designated hitter Cory Pitts laced an rbi single to plate second baseman Jarrett Northcut who reached base with a single two batters earlier. From that point, UVa-Wise starter Cody Bentley (Wise, VA) settled down and threw three consecutive scoreless innings. Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) would tie the score in the top of the 5th on a sacrifice fly that allowed Jonathon Cox (Martinsville, VA) to score. Cox reached base on an infield single before being advanced to third by Luis Roa's (Arecibo, P.R.) single.
Berry would answer the score in the bottom half of the inning as the Vikings connected for multiple runs. Brock Anderson and Northcutt would reach base by way of walk to start off the bottom of the 5th. Following the walks Berry would use a timely bunt hit by Issac Hardee to load the bases. UVa-Wise would then aid Berry by an error, and the Vikings never looked back as they pushed six runs across before the inning was complete. The following inning Berry would start another rally after Northcutt lead off the inning with a triple. He scored one batter later on Pitts' rbi single. Another Cavalier error would spring Berry to another big inning. In all, Berry would push the game out of reach by scoring five in the sixth.
On the day UVa-Wise was lead by Roa who went 3 for 3 while stealing his first bag of the season. Robbins went 1 for 3 while collecting his first rbi of 2010. Adam Skoranski (Cheyenne, WY) and Cox also collected hits on the day. Starter Bentley finished his first start of the season allowing just one run over four innings of work. The teams will conclude the three game series tomorrow with a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
