BoxscoreWise, Va. -- In a second half of short spurts, UVa-Wise put together a key run when it counted to overtake Tennessee Wesleyan in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. Travis Berry's 26-point night led six Highland Cavaliers in double figures in the 99-88 defeat of the Bulldogs.
Leading 84-83 with 4:27 left, Mark Phillips started the game-deciding run with a layup and complete a three-point play. Following a Berry free throw, Norris Gaskins pulled in the defensive rebound, raced through traffic and found Pance Kecev in the far right corner for the game-sealing triple to make it 91-83 at 2:20. UVa-Wise made eight of 10 free throws the rest of the way for the 99-88 win.
The victory puts UVa-Wise (15-12) into the AAC semifinals and a trip northward to face top seed Bluefield College (16-14) on Friday night in another 7:30 p.m. tip-off. The Rams defeated ninth seed Montreat, 93-55.
Berry hit eight of 15 tries including five of eight triples for a season-high 26-point effort. He added four assists, two steals and two rebounds. Gaskins had a top all-around game of 14 points on four of five attempts, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals.
Kecev added 14 points with two three-pointers and six of six from the charity stripe. Sam Eilgwe and Mark Phillips contributed 12 and 11 tallies. Kevin Perry rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points.
The Cavs made 31 of 59 tries on the night for a 52.5% clip. The home team committed only nine turnovers while forcing 21.
Tennessee Wesleyan (13-16) received 21 points from Sean Bridges and 18 points by Matt Harper.
