Wise, Va. -
After having a difficult first half, Kristin Mullins drained the biggest bucket
of the night from the deep left corner with exactly a minute left to help
UVa-Wise edge Montreat College, 67-66, in the Appalachian Athletic Conference
women's basketball quarterfinals.
Trailing 64-58 with 2:54 left, Mullins grabbed the offensive rebound and laid the ball in to cut the difference to four. Ayla Young stole the ball for the Highland Cavaliers (16-12) on the next trip before Mullins was fouled. Montreat (20-10) was called for a technical foul so Brittney Maxwell drained the two free throws and Mullins hit both of hers to tie the game, 64-64, with 2:09 left. Each team missed their next shots before Chaecie Bullock laid the ball in for a 66-64 lead with 1:07 remaining. Amber Carter raced down the floor to find Mullins for what would turn out to be the game-winner, 67-66, at 1:00. Montreat stole the ball and missed a three-pointer as time ran out.
UVa-Wise will move on to face second-seed Union College, who beat Bryan College, 69-60. The Cavs will travel to Barbourville, Ky. for a 4:00 p.m. affair on Saturday afternoon against the Lady Bulldogs for the rubber game of the season after splitting the first two meetings.
Mullins hit just one of five shots for two points in the first half. She hit her stride in half number two with six of eight attempts for 15 points in the deciding half for a game-best 17 points on the night on seven of 13 shots including hitting her lone three-point attempt for the winning points.
Young was the other lone double digit scorer with 11 points including three triples. Carter added nine tallies and six assists. Meghan Rutherford added seven points and seven caroms. Emily Doan downed two three-pointers in the first half for six points.
Brittany Boyce and Chaecie Bullock paced Montreat with 12 points apiece. Alicia Wallace had a double-double inside with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
