
Asheville, N.C. - The ‘Super Soph' women's basketball pair of Amber Carter and Kristin Mullins earned All-Appalachian Athletic Conference first team status announced today as voted upon by the league's head coaches.
The teammates comprised two-fifths of the top team and gave the Highland Cavaliers the only squad to have multiple first teamers. Along with the first team acclaim, Carter picked up the Defensive Player of the Year award.
The two second-year players have helped to produce a benchmark season under first year head coach Jason Montgomery. After winning only six games in each of the last two years, UVa-Wise has laid claim to 16 victories in 28 contests for a 16-12 mark and a trip into the AAC Tournament Semifinals to be played on Saturday afternoon. The Cavs were picked to place sixth in the preseason poll but found themselves in the lead for part of the season before finishing in a tie for third place.
For the second year in a row, Mullins and Carter finished one-two in scoring for the Cavs. Mullins from Clintwood, Va. added another 3.7 points per contest to her average to finish at 15.9 points per game, third in the AAC. The 5-10 swing player led the league in field goal percentage at 52.2% and produced nine double-doubles for the season. Mullins also had top rebounding numbers of 8.0 per contest and hit 74.6% (91 of 122 attempts) from the charity stripe along with half of her three-point tries (seven of 14). She set her two-year high of 25 points against Bluefield College while grabbing 13 rebounds, another career-best, to go with 24 tallies against Union College.
Carter made her second appearance in as many years onto the AAC All-Defensive team. The Bristow, Va. product not only earned another spot on the team but also claimed the Defensive Player of the Year award. The sophomore point guard led the AAC in steals per game (2.59/gm) and steals (71) to be selected for the honor. She also handed out the most assists per affair (4.3/gm) and second in total assists at 122. Carter improved her scoring output by 1.3 points from her first season to 12.9 ppg. She was another solid shooter at the foul line by making 134 of 179 tries (74.9%).
First-year player Chelsea Cluesman was the Cavs' player who made the AAC All-Freshman team. The 5-10 forward from Lee High produced a solid 4.1 points and grabbed 4.0 rebounds per game in 14.1 minutes of action. The Jonesville, Va. native made 48.1% (39 of 81) of her field goal tries, stole 25 balls and handed out 19 helpers.
The final honorees were the pair of Mullins and sophomore Emily Doane who worked their way onto the AAC All-Academic team. Doane (Chilhowie, Va.) produced 2.9 points with 21 three-pointers and 24 assists over the team's 29 contests.
