
Dayton, TN - Despite scoring 13 runs on 21 hits the Highland Cavaliers fell 15-13 in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Saturday. The loss dropped UVa-Wise to 0-6 overall and 0-3 inside the AAC.
The Highland Cavaliers got off to a hot start by scoring at least one run in each of the first five innings. In the first, freshman Brian King (Chantilly, VA) scored on a Cody Bentley (Wise, VA) base hit to start the offensive onslaught. After allowing Bryan to tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning UVa-Wise would crack the scoring column again the second inning. Danny Bates (Chantilly, VA) drove home Jonathon Cox on an rbi single to put the Cavaliers up 2-1. Following a scoreless bottom half of the second Brett Hylton (Dry Fork, VA) blasted a home run scoring Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) who had reached base by way of base hit earlier in the inning.
Again, the Lions would answer by scoring two runs in the bottom half. The scoring frenzy would continue as the two schools would combine to score 16 runs over the next two innings. UVa-Wise would score five runs in the fifth as Bentley, Robbins, Hylton, and Dusty Haigler (Hanover, PA) collected rbi in the inning. Despite the powerful offensive surge UVa-Wise could not hold the lead as Bryan would score two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to match UVa-Wise.
The Lions would take their first lead of the contest in the by scoring six runs in the home half of the seventh. The first five Lions reached base in the seventh and Kevin Layne cleared the bases with a three run home run. UVa-Wise would mount a comeback attempt in the 9th but were unable to draw any closer than two runs the rest of the way.
UVa-Wise will now travel to Cocoa Beach, FL to compete in the 2010 Cocoa Beach Expo. The tournament will begin on Monday when UVa-Wise takes on Penn. St. Wilkes-Barre.
