Lynchburg, Va. - With its extremely young team and limited outside time, UVa-Wise expected the early season to be a growing process on the softball field. The Lady Hornets of Lynchburg College took a bite of the Highland Cavaliers in a twinbill, 3-0 and 9-6, on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) paced the nine hit attack for UVa-Wise (1-6) with three hits including a solo home run. Kaitlin Bennett added her own two-run round-tripper while Kayla Cash singled in each game. Ashleigh Roenker, Maddi Ridenour and Kirsten Velazquez lined a hit apiece.
Lynchburg (6-2) drew a bases loaded walk in the second and a pair of tallies in the third to take a 3-0 lead in the opener. UVa-Wise recorded its first hit off Cantone's bat in the fourth and three more the rest of the way but failed to score in the 3-0 final.
In the late contest, Cantone wasted no time in putting the visitors on the scoreboard with a two out solo homer in the top of the first frame. The Lady Hornets tied the game, 1-1, in the home first, two in the second and three more in the fifth to lead 6-1.
UVa-Wise came storming back in the top of the sixth. Cantone drove in Cash, who singled, and Ridenour for a 6-3 score on her single to left field. Roenker drove Cantone home on her own single before Bennett belted a two-run home run to tie the game, 6-6.
The tie would not last as Lynchburg jumped on the UVa-Wise pitching in the home sixth for a trio of runs for what would be the 9-6 final score.
UVa-Wise is now off until playing a twinbill at the University of the Cumberlands starting at 3:00 p.m. next Friday, March 12th.
