
Cocoa Beach, FL - The winning streak has now reached three for the Highland Cavaliers. UVa-Wise defeated Penn St. Greater-Allegheny 5-3 on Tuesday to improve to 3-6 on the season. Jonathon Cox pitched five solid innings allowing just one run before giving way to the bullpen. Reliever Preston Smith picked up the win while Cody Bentley earned a save for pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.
UVa-Wise took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and behind pitcher Jonathon Cox (Martinsville, VA) maintained that lead until the sixth when Penn St. Greater Allegheny took a 3-2 lead. Using timely hitting and errors by Greater Allegheny UVa-Wise overcame an eight strikeout day by Greater Allegheny starter Mike Jackson. The Highland Cavaliers took the lead for good in the top of the seventh connecting for three runs to take a 5-3 lead. The UVa-Wise bullpen would not surrender another run as they closed out the game with three consecutive scoreless innings. Preston Smith (Bristol, VA) earned his first win of the season while Cody Bentley (Wise, VA) picked up his first save of 2010.
