Bristol, Va. - On an overcast afternoon, UVa-Wise used the power of five home runs but was only enough for a softball split at Virginia Intermont. The Highland Cavaliers scored in each of the first five innings for an 8-3 win before the Lady Cobras bounced back with a five-run fifth to prevail 8-4 in the late affair.

Tied 1-1 after one inning in the opener, the Cavs (4-8) pushed across a pair in the second, one in the third and fourth along with another trio of scores in the fifth to open an 8-1 lead. The Lady Cobras scooted home two scores in the sixth but was not enough for the 8-3 final.

UVa-Wise broke open a 1-1 contest in the top of the fourth of the late contest with three runs to make it 4-1. Virginia Intermont put a single tally on the board in the fourth before breaking out for six tallies in the fifth and held the visitors scoreless in the final two frames for an 8-4 win.

Freshman Kayla Cash had the power bat for the Cavs. The catcher accounted for four hits including three for three in game one where she had a double, home run and five rbi before a solo shot in the late game. 

UVa-Wise hitters smashed three more round-trippers. Ashleigh Roenker doubled and homered with three rbi in the opener. Christine Cantone had three hits for the day including a home run in the second while Kesha Perrigan belted a solo homer in game two.

Rounding out the offense, Maddi Ridenour and Kirsten Valezquez lined two hits apiece and Katie Rinkewich doubled.

Lauren Snead picked up her fourth victory by pitching four frames in the opener and fanned five.

UVa-Wise will now have a few days off before traveling to Montreat College for its Appalachian Athletic Conference opener for two games starting at 1:00 p.m.
