Woodbridge, Va. - The recruiting has already started on the UVa-Wise men's basketball front. Fresh off the program's second trip to the NAIA National Championship, the Highland Cavaliers staff announced the signing of one of the top point guard from the District of Columbia area in Woodbridge High's Darius Smith.
UVa-Wise (17-13) claimed its second Appalachian Athletic Conference crown and fell to Elite Eight finalist Indiana Wesleyan at the NAIA Division II Men's basketball championship a week ago.
The future Cav point guard chose to head to southwest Virginia after having offers from NCAA Division II programs of Bowie State (Md.) and Wheeling Jesuit along with interest from NCAA Division I members StonyBrook, Jacksonville, Hampton and Bucknell.
The 5-11 Smith started for national powerhouse Montrose Christian in Rockville, Md. as a sophomore before transferring to Woodbridge. This season Smith received All-Cardinal District and All-Area first team selection. He averaged 12.2 points per game to lead the Vikings to an 11-9 overall record and a 6-3 record in the Cardinal District.
