Wise, Va. - Lambuth University made sure it was not a happy Homecoming for the seventh-ranked UVa-Wise football team on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles took advantage of five Highland Cavaliers turnovers, posted a big 24-point second quarter and fended off a late home charge for a 51-40 Mid-South Conference crossover affair.

Lambuth (3-2) continued having the number of UVa-Wise (3-1) as it improved to 7-0 lifetime in the series. The Eagles have now won three in a row and ended the Cavs four-game win streak dating back to the final game of 2007.

Trailing 12-10 after a long Cavs' scoring pass, the Eagles scored the next 24 points and would never trail again. B.A. Davis rumbled into the endzone from four yards before three Lambuth interceptions led to two touchdowns for a 34-12 halftime lead.

James Haley (Gladys, Va.) and Amondre Johnson (Roanoke, Va.) paced the UVa-Wise defense with 17 and 15 tackles. Haley had 11 solo stops and forced a fumble while Johnson had 1.5 tackles for loss.

Jason Lovett (Fredericksburg, Va.) pulled in six passes for 144 yards and a 92-yard score. Aric Evans added four grabs for 79 yards and Matt Barbour (Brookneal, Va.) had two catches for 68 yards with 44-yard score. Quarterback Randy Hippeard (Stafford, Va.) had his most disappointing outing a long time as he completed 13 of 28 attempts for 263 yards and two touchdowns but threw his first three interceptions in his last seven games. Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) finished four of seven for 70 yards in relief.

Edward Robinson rambled for 181 yards on 23 carries and a 26-yard touchdown as part of the 452 yards of total offense for Lambuth. Quarterback Josh Garza completed 10 of 17 attempts for 161 yards and two scores with an interception. Landon Talley pulled in both touchdown passes on five receptions for 76 yards. Rashad Taylor picked off a pass for a 25-yard score while Jason Ware and Anton Anderson added interceptions.

After a 27-yard Ryan Nanney field goal for Lambuth, Keith McBride answered on the following kick-off for a 93-yard touchdown return for UVa-Wise. The Eagles came right back for a score on the Garza to Talley 26-yard pass for a 10-6 score to complete the first quarter scoring.

Hippeard found Lovett on a pass just over a defender that went 92 yards to give what would be the final home lead 12-10. Lambuth went 76 yards on seven plays capped by the Davis four-yard plunge to go back ahead 17-12. The Eagles used two interceptions and a short Cavs' punt to post 17 more points for the 34-12 halftime score.

Jyron Barclay returned the opening second half kick-off 83 yards to give UVa-Wise early momentum to make it 34-19. After the Cavs defense forced a punt, the Eagles pounced on a touched punt and recovered at the home 28-yardline. Garza squashed the UVa-Wise charge by finding the endzone from a yard six plays later to push it to a 41-19 contest.

With the score 51-26, Hippeard tried to bring the Cavs back by hitting Barbour from 44 yards out with 8:31 left in the game. Haley forced a fumble by Lambuth's Garza and saw Dominque Simmons return the loose ball to the visitor 15-yardline. Hippeard ran the ball all 15 yards on the next play to cut the difference to 51-40 with 6:05 showing on the clock.

The Eagles would never give the ball back. Lambuth was able to convert three third downs and run out the final six minutes and completed the upset of seventh-rated UVa-Wise, 51-40.

UVa-Wise will return to Mid-South East action next Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4 at rival Georgetown College starting at 1:30 p.m.

Notes: UVa-Wise QB Randy Hippeard became the first Cav to break 9,000 career yards passing in the game and now stands at 9,215 yards.
