
Wise, VA - UVa-Wise swept Southern Virginia University in a baseball double header at Stallard Field on Tuesday. The Highland Cavaliers used a three run home run by Alex Feemster in the bottom of the sixth to win game one 15-5. UVa-Wise tied the second game in the sixth with a two run home by Brad Robbins and won the game in the seventh when Tommy Meier tripled in Brad Ricker to secure the win 4-3. With the victories, UVa-Wise improves to 16-14 on the season.
The day's first game saw UVa-Wise score ten or more runs for the second game in a row. The Highland Cavaliers put 15 runs on the board in the contest. Starter Josh Joseph went five innings without allowing an earned run, Joseph walked just one Southern Virginia batter in the outing. Highland Cavalier reliever Josh Guizar returned to form as he pitched an inning without allowing a base runner. To complement Feemster's home run Brett Hylton went 2-3 picking up three rbi, Chaz Hall also knocked in three, while Brian King, Dusty Haigler, and Robbins all had two hit games. Southern Virginia was led by Jack Johnson who went 3-4 at the plate while knocking in three runs.
In game two the Knights led 3-0 heading into the bottom of
the fifth. Southern Virginia built their
lead in large part to four UVa-Wise errors. Even with the sloppy play, the Highland Cavaliers were able to cut a run
down at the plate in the fourth. With
runners on the corners, UVa-Wise pitcher Jonathon Cox unleashed a wild pitch
but, Cox quickly covered the plate and received a perfect throw from catcher
Tommy Meier to catch Trager Hintze trying to score.
The Cavaliers started the comeback in the fifth when Alex Feemster walked, stole second, and scored on a Brad Ricker double. UVa-Wise tied the game one inning later, Cody Bentley was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, he scored one batter later when Robbins hit his fifth home run of the season. After shutting Southern Virginia down in the top half of the seventh, UVa-Wise won the game in the bottom half. Following a Feemster ground out, Brad Ricker walked, setting the stage for freshman Tommy Meier. Meier lined a ball over the head of the center field for a triple allowing Ricker to score the win. Jonathan Hawkins earned the win for UVa-Wise in relief. Hawkins hurled three and a third innings of scoreless baseball to improve to 4-0 on the season.
UVa-Wise will return to action tomorrow when they host Emory and Henry for a double header starting at 4:00 p.m.
