
Wise, VA - UVa-Wise made quick work of Virginia Intermont in a non conference game at Stallard field on Wednesday. The Highland Cavaliers took advantage of the run rule defeating the Cobras 19-7 in seven innings.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, UVa-Wise took the lead in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. Brad Robbins doubled in Tommy Meier and Luis Roa to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead. Just one batter later, Dusty Haigler homered to push the lead to 4-1.
UVa-Wise put the game out of reach in the third as they put six runs on the board. The Highland Cavaliers put five hits together in the inning to produce the six runs. Robbins, Brett Hytlon, Jonathon Cox, Brad Ricker, and Meier all collected rbi in the big inning.
Virginia Intermont would cut the lead to 11-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth only to see UVa-Wise extended its lead to double digits. UVa-Wise would score eight runs in the inning on just two hits in the inning, taking advantage of Virginia Intermont walks. The big hit of the inning came when Robbins struck for his sixth home run of the season, the home run scored Kirby Bush and Ricker. On the night, Robbins went 4-5 collecting six rbi.
The Cobras threatened to extend the game in the top of the seventh as they scored four runs. However, UVa-Wise reliever Taylor Jones came on to record the game's final three outs. The 19 runs mark the largest run total for UVa-Wise this season. With the win, UVa-Wise now stands at 22-14, the Cavaliers return to action when they host Alice Lloyd tomorrow.
