Waleska, GA - Walks doomed UVa-Wise on Wednesday as Covenant took advantage of nine free passes to score six runs in the second to pull away for an Appalachian Athletic Conference victory. With the loss the Highland Cavaliers fall to 25-17 overall and 10-13 in the AAC. UVa-Wise will return to action this weekend when they host conference leader Tennessee Wesleyan.

UVa-Wise scored two in the first as Brad Ricker and Tommy Meier each singled to lead off the inning. The duo scored when Brad Robbins doubled to center field. The two run lead was short lived as Covenant answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a Taylor Oldham home tying the score at two. UVa-Wise regained the lead in the second when Chaz Hall singled and moved to third on a Ricker base hit; the shortstop scored on an rbi ground out by Meier.

Covenant went ahead for good in the second with six runs. Four of the inning's first five hitters reached via walk;   James Rollins doubled and Jared Carlson hit a two run home run to highlight the six run inning. The Cavaliers answered back with a solo home run by Brett Hytlon in the third. Covenant responded back with two more runs in the home half of the third to lead 10-4 after three.

UVa-Wise was only able to produce one more run in the contest, again Hylton was involved. Dusty Haigler doubled to lead off the inning and scored two outs later when Hytlon doubled in his second rbi of the game. On the day, UVa-Wise pitching allowed ten walks while surrendering eight hits in the loss.

Weather will dictate when this weekend's series will be played; continue to check the UVa-Wise athletic website for continued updates on schedule changes.
