
Kingsport, TN - Union college out slugged UVa-Wise 18-14 in Monday's Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament game. The Bulldogs will advance to play the loser of the Bluefield vs. Bryan game tomorrow while the Highland Cavaliers finish the season at 27-21.
Union College appeared to put the game out of reach with nine runs in the second inning. However, UVa-Wise battled back throughout the contest. In the fourth, UVa-Wise cut the deficit to three by putting six runs on the board. Brad Robbins capped off the inning with a two run double down the first base line. On the day, Robbins went five for six with three doubles; the three doubles gave Robbins 21 for the season. The number ties Robbins with former Highland Cavalier Steve Tyler for the most doubles in a season.
Following two Union runs, the Cavaliers answered back with five runs in the sixth to tie the game at 11. Again, Robbins connected for a two run double to highlight the inning. Union re-gained the lead in the seventh when Steve Scheelk scored on a wild pitch to make the score 12-11. A half inning later, UVa-Wise took its first lead of the game thanks to a two run double by Luis Roa; Roa would also score in the inning on a wild pitch to put the Cavaliers ahead 14-12.
The Bulldogs would re-take the lead in the eighth by scoring five runs. Tyler Martin and Ben Hartley each lined rbi singles to tie the contest, Hartley would score on a wild pitch to give Union a 15-14 lead. The Bulldogs extended the lead to three on a Brian Mouton two rbi base hit. Union scored its 18th run I in the ninth as Hartley lined another rbi single.
UVa-Wise mounted a rally in the ninth as Robbins lined his fifth hit of the day to lead off the inning. Robbins would end up stranded on third base as Union would retire the next three Highland Cavaliers to close out the game. For the game, Robbins had four rbi and three runs scored while Tommy Meier, Roa, and Brian King each had two rbi. Cody Bentley also had a solid day at the plate, Bentley went four for five while scoring two runs and knocking in one.
In total, the game took three hours and 37 minutes to play. The two schools combined to use 13 pitchers who threw 287 pitches. In his final collegiate game, Robbins set a new career high with five hits; the Big Stone Gap, Virginia native finished his career with more school records than any previous UVa-Wise hitter.
