Wise, VA - Second year head coach Kendall Rainey's Highland Cavaliers will enter the Mid-South Conference in 2010 with hopes of improving on a 9-22 record in 2009. Leading the way for UVa-Wise will be all conference performer Mikaela Anders. Last season, Anders led the team in kills with 359 from her middle hitter position.
The Cavs will get a heavy dose of traveling early in the season as the team will play nine of its first ten games away from Wise. The season kicks off on August 27th when UVa-Wise competes in the Milligan Mountain Madness Invitational. In that event, the Cavs are set to play former Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Milligan on Friday while playing Southern Virginia on Saturday. On September 7th, the Cavs will play at home for the first time as they play host to Mountain State University. A year ago, UVa-Wise and Mountain State split two matches; the Cavs won a four game match at home. UVa-Wise dropped game one of the match before rallying to win three consecutive games in posting the victory.
UVa-Wise will enter new territory on September 16th when Pikeville comes to Wise. The Cavs and Bears have a long history of competition against each other but never as members of the Mid-South. The two schools separated by approximately 45 miles will square off in the first ever Mid-South match at UVa-Wise. In 2009, the Cavaliers won both meetings against the Bears; UVa-Wise won 3-0 at Pikeville before repeating the 3-0 victory at home later in the season.
UVa-Wise will enter a key stretch of matches on October 12th. From October 12th to the 23rd UVa-Wise will play five matches with four of the five being conference matches. The stretch kicks off with a big home match against Campbellsville. The Tigers were 38-13 a year ago finishing
two games behind Georgetown in the final Mid-South standings.
The regular season home finale will be on November 2nd when UVa-Wise hosts Rio Grande University. The Cavs first trip to the Mid-South Conference Tournament is set to begin on November 9th. The event is being held in Frankfort, Kentucky from November 9th to the 10th.
