Athletic teams at The University of Virginia's College at Wise will soon
sport a new logo designed to accentuate the College's identity and
serve as a unique marketing tool for the Athletic Department.
The new logo uses the letter "V" or "UVA-WISE." A new Cavalier head can
be used alone or with the "V" or "UVA-WISE." The logo will gradually be
implemented as uniforms and other items are replaced.
The logo change is due to copyright infringement related to the use of
the previous style V and sabers logo on uniforms, clothing, souvenirs or
playing surfaces, said Danny Sterling, UVa-Wise director of athletics.
"Once we were made aware of the copyright issue, we held multiple
discussions with the coaching staff, the UVa-Wise Bookstore, alumni,
administration, students, and current and former student athletes,"
Sterling said.
Several points were consistently mentioned as a result of the
discussions. The athletic logo, it was decided, should be unique to
UVa-Wise athletics, emphasize the UVa-Wise name, and be strong and
marketable.
"Several hundred prototypes were developed and ultimately rejected,"
Sterling said. "We decided to go back to the drawing board and develop a
more comprehensive logo."
After feedback from a focus group of staff and students, the logo was
developed.
"The concept has been positively received from every group we have
shared it with, and it also received positive feedback from our
licensing group," Sterling said. "I appreciate everyone who was involved
in this process, but I want to express my sincere gratitude to Jenny
Salyers, the artist who worked her magic on the concepts and many of my
crazy ideas and made what you see here."
