Louisville, Ky. - After the biggest road victory in recent years, UVa-Wise saw the two top performers of the 35-28 victory over Georgetown, defensive end Josh Weaver and quarterback Randy Hippeard, earn Mid-South Conference player of the week awards.
The 13th-ranked Highland Cavaliers (4-1) secured the football program's first win in five trips to Georgetown's Toyota Stadium and second-straight victory in the series. The win kept the Cavs perfect in the Mid-South East Division with a 2-0 record.
Weaver, a sophomore from Alexandria, Va., had his best game of his first season at UVa-Wise. The defensive end recorded eight tackles, five solo, one sack, 2.5 tackles for loss and batted down a pass at the line. The West Potomac High product stripped a Georgetown runner early in the fourth quarter and recovered the fumble to set up UVa-Wise's fourth touchdown and first lead of the day to round out his numbers. He helped the Cavs limit the Tigers offense to 382 yards of offense, 177 yards less than the 2007 meeting.
Weaver has 15 tackles and four tackles for loss over the first five games.
Hippeard bounced back from a tough week the previous week to return to his All-American form. He had a hand in all five UVa-Wise touchdowns of the win. He passed for three scores and plunged in from one-yard out two other times. The senior completed 24 of 32 pass attempts for 325 yards while rushing for a career-high 50 yards on 14 carries to give him 375 yards of total offense. His short pass on a curl route to wideout Aric Evans turned into a 56-yard touchdown with 58 seconds left in the game for the game-winning points.
The signal-caller from Stafford, Va. leads the NAIA in pass efficiency with a rating of 214.05, more than 70 points higher than the second rated passer. He has completed 88 of 131 passes for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns to just three interceptions. Hippeard has rushed for 103 yards on 25 carries with three scores. The veteran quarterback needs 460 yards passing for 10,000 career passing yards and six more passing scores to reach 100.
UVa-Wise retuns home in Mid-South East action this Saturday, October 11 starting at 1:30 p.m. against Campbellsville University.
