WISE - - UVa-Wise senior linebacker Zachary Blair has been named Second-Team All-America by the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner's Association. A 6-foot-2, 215-pound native of Front Royal, Va., Blair established a new NCAA Division II record for tackles for loss in a career with 80. This season, the former Skyline High School standout tallied 21 TFLs to lead both UVa-Wise and the Mountain East Conference for the third consecutive season.
The All-America honor is the latest of many accolades bestowed on Blair throughout his collegiate career. This season, he was twice named MEC Defensive Player of the Week before earning All-MEC First-Team honors. Also a First-Team All-Super Region I selection, the linebacker was named the Commonwealth's Small College Linebacker of the Year by the Richmond Times Dispatch for the second consecutive year.
A year ago, Blair was an All-MEC First-Team honoree while garnering Second-Team All-Super Region I status. The Don Hansen All-America Committee named him Honorable Mention All-America following a junior campaign that saw him lead the nation in TFLs with 28.
He was named to Lindy's Preseason All-America Team prior to the start of the 2016 season.
The three-time All-MEC First-Team honoree wrapped up his collegiate career by helping transform the football program at UVa-Wise. Blair led the Cavaliers in tackles (87), solo tackles (52), TFLs (21), sacks (5) and blocked kicks (2) as the program won six games and claimed its first winning season since 2008.
Blair finished his career with six school records and two conference records.
The Division II Conference Commissioner's Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities. The sports information directors from NCAA Division II colleges and universities that field football voted on the team.
